HHL was founded in 1898 upon an initiative by the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce. In 1946, it was integrated into Leipzig University and regained partial independence in 1969. The school was re-founded in 1992, again, through an initiative of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce. HHL is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. Well known former professors of HHL include Hermann Großmann, Arthur Lisowsky, Karl von der Aa, Karl Thalheim, Heinrich Niklisch and Balduin Penndorf. Well known former students of HHL include Eugen Schmalenbach and Rudolf Seyffert.
Teaching and research at HHL is conducted almost entirely in English with some country-specific courses which are held in German. The school awards postgraduate degrees such as the Master of Science in General Management (M.Sc.) and the Master in Business Administration (MBA) in a full-time and part-time teaching scheme.
In April 2004, HHL was the first of the private business schools in Germany to be accredited by AACSBInternational (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). HHL was ranked as Germany's best business school by karriere magazine in May 2006 and often ranks in the German Top 3 in other publications. In 2009, Financial Times ranked the institution #70 in Europe and #3 in Germany in its European Business School rankings.[1] In 2010, HHL's Master in Management program was ranked in Financial Times' Master in Management ranking as #3 in Germany and #38 worldwide.[2]
In all programmes, international study abroad students, who are staying for one to three terms at HHL, are integrated. These students come on exchange from the over 100 partner universities of Handelshochschule Leipzig HHL), including the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and the business school of Tulane University. It has dual degree programmes with Universidad de Talca (Chile), Universidad de Chile (Chile), Tongji University (China), Universidad EAFIT (Colombia), INCAE (Costa Rica), Universidad del Pacifico (Ecuador), ESC Montpellier; ESC Toulouse; ISC Paris; ESCI Fontainebleau (France), MDI (India), KDI School (South Korea), Norwegian School of Management (Norway), ESAN (Peru), EADA Business School (Spain), Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), and Florida International University (USA).
The school has an executive education centre, founded in co-operation with INSEAD. Initially named the INSEAD Zentrum Leipzig (IZL) it is now called HHL Executive Education.
The MBA programme is directed towards students who already hold a university degree and can present work experience. The programme is conducted via small classes and has an international focus and hands-on approach. As a result of which, participants in the MBA programme come from various backgrounds and classes are usually made up of 65% and more non-Germans. Thus, social competence is key to study success. In 2009, Financial Times ranked the MBA #34 in Europe in its European Business School rankings.[3]
The general management approach focusses on the topics leadership and global experience. This content, as well as all core disciplines of economics, are being taught in mandatory core courses. Electives are interdisciplinary and reflect current management challenges.
In this 18-month, 100% English taught programme, participants can attain the internationally recognized degree Master of Science in General Management (M.Sc.). Students spend a mandatory term abroad at one of the partner institutions of HHL. Entry requirements are a completed Bachelor’s degree in Business, three months of practical experience, GMAT, TOEFL, as well as passing the HHL entry exam.
In the 24-month part-time version of the program, classes are scheduled every other weekend in Leipzig. The program is designed to adapt to the needs of full-time working professionals. Entry requirements are a completed Bachelor’s degree in Business, at least three months of practical experience, GMAT (alternatively HHL Entry Test), TOEFL, as well as passing the HHL interview.
